In his first appearance as Kamala Harris’s running mate, Tim Walz wasted no time coming for J.D. Vance and the rumor that he wrote about fucking a couch in Hillbilly Elegy. At a rally in Philadelphia, Walz made a joke about Vance and his couch, formally announcing himself as a guy who spends a good amount of time on the internet (or at least has staff that do).
Walz, who has great comedic timing, wound up before landing the joke. “Like all the regular people I grew up with in the heartland, J.D. studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, and then wrote a best seller trashing that community. Come on!” Walz exclaimed.
“I gotta tell ya, I can’t wait to debate the guy,” Walz said to uproarious applause. “That is if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up!”
Ba dum tss! The crowd went wild. I love when he says, “See what I did there?” Shockingly (to me), it seemed like a lot of people at the rally did get it, meaning that the rumor that Vance once fucked his couch and wrote about it has spread beyond those of us still chained to X.com. Who knew!
This certainly went over better than when Vance tried to make a couch joke of his own. Walz won, and hopefully we can stop hearing about the couch thing moving forward. I don’t want to have to explain it to my older relatives. Plus, there is so much other stuff Walz can attack Vance for — the man is weird.
